Successful TACSAT-via-INMARSAT Testing
Use FORAX-LS for UHF MILSATCOM via INMARSAT (!)
In February, one of our DoD customers came to Syntonics to test the performance of an interesting INMARSAT product, L-TAC
, when used with Syntonics' FORAX-LS
enables tactical radios to use UHF MILSATCOM beyond line-of-sight (BLOS) communications via the INMARSAT system. In their words, "Designed with U.S. military users in mind, Inmarsat's global L-TAC
service complements the scarce UHF satellite capacity with a single-hop, low-latency voice and data service, providing additional reliable capacity when UHF channels are inaccessible. Available on a global, seamless basis, L-TAC
enables existing in-service tactical radios to access BLOS without the need to modify the radio hardware or the cryptos."FORAX-LS
is Syntonics' newest RF-over-Fiber offering. Using FORAX-LS
to connect the tactical radio to L-TAC means that the radio can stay with the user, secure and convenient in the command post, while the INMARSAT equipment is far away, connected by one strand of single mode optical fiber.
Testing demonstrated that FORAX-LS
was completely transparent to the communications performance of the PRC-117F radios and the INMARSAT equipment. Both encrypted voice and data were communicated at the exact same voice quality and Bit Error Rates, respectively, with and without FORAX-LS
